A Personal Note From Coach Nico: When I decided to step away from traditional fitness marketing, it wasn't because I stopped believing in coaching. It was because I couldn't stomach what the industry had become. The modern weight loss industry operates on what I call "Sales Truthiness". Tactics that sound completely convincing on paper, but are engineered to make you fail so you keep buying the next 21 day fix. You don't need another drill sergeant yelling at you or an influencer telling you to ban carbs. You need a guide who understands physiology, human behaviour, and the realities of a busy life.
If you are looking for support on your health journey, here is how to spot the predatory red flags - and what true, sustainable coaching actually looks like.
Have you ever wondered why rapid transformation challenges are everywhere? From "21 Day Shreds" to "6 Week Bootcamps," these programs dominate social media for one simple reason: short term suffering produces short term, marketable results.

When a client loses 8 lbs of water and muscle in three weeks through severe starvation, the coach takes a before and after photo to sell the next cohort. But when the client inevitably regains the weight a month later because the protocol was impossible to maintain, the industry shifts the blame: "You just lacked discipline."
This is high turnover business disguised as health care. True coaching isn't about getting fast results; it's about building skills you can keep for the rest of your life.
6 Red Flags When Hiring a Health Coach
Before investing your hard earned money, and more importantly your time and trust, look out for these six common warning signs:
Reliance on "Before and After" Photo Proof: For years, shady marketers have bought bulk transformation photos on platforms like Fiverr - where you can literally buy 500 to 1,000 "keto transformation" images for just £4 or £5. Add modern AI image generation into the mix, and creating convincing "client transformations" takes seconds. Real social proof is found in long term client retention and genuine lifestyle stories, not stock images or AI renders.
Promises of Rapid, Guaranteed Results: Anyone promising "10 lbs off in 10 days" is selling water weight loss through extreme stress on your body, not sustainable fat loss.
Rigid Food Banning ("Clean" vs. "Dirty"): If a coach hands you a list of "banned" everyday foods or insists that carbs, dairy, or fruit are "toxic," they are selling dogma, not science.
One Size Fits All Meal Plans: A PDF document dictating exact grams of chicken and broccoli at 1:00 PM ignores your work schedule, family life, stress levels, and personal values.
"Drill Sergeant" Accountability: Pushing you into shame, guilt, or punishment when life gets in the way destroys your psychological safety and leads directly to burnout.
Proprietary Supplements or Quick Fix Tech: If success relies on buying their branded shake, detox tea, or fat-burner pills, you are participating in a sales funnel, not health coaching.

A qualified, evidence-based coach acts as a partner rather than an authority figure. Here is what you should demand from anyone you hire:

When interviewing a potential health professional or coach, ask these four questions to uncover their true methodology:
"What happens when I'm tired, life gets busy or stressful and I can't stick to the plan?" (Listen for empathy and adaptability vs. "you just need to stay disciplined.")
"How do you tailor your approach to my current job, family commitments, and stress levels?" (Listen for personalized habit-building vs. rigid pre-made templates.)
"Do you focus on calorie counting apps, or do you teach practical real-world portion skills?" (Listen for sustainable skill-building vs. high-friction app tracking.)
"How will we know when I am ready to graduate and manage my health independently?" (A good coach wants to make themselves redundant, not keep you hooked forever.)
If you're looking for support on your health journey, finding the right coach comes down to much more than fancy credentials - it comes down to finding someone who genuinely understands you and your life. When you've found a good coach, you'll notice seven clear signs:
They Have a Clear, Proven Process: They can explain their methodology step-by-step and draw on real experience working with clients who share your specific challenges.
They Show Transparent Proof: They are open to sharing genuine references and client stories that reflect real, long-term feedback.
They Ask Questions & Listen Deeply: They don't hand you a rigid, pre-packaged plan. They take time to understand your motivations, listen to your feedback, and adapt.
They Communicate Openly: They set clear check-ins, establish reliable response times, and keep communication honest and consistent.
They Take a "Deep Health" Approach: They look beyond just food and workouts - considering your sleep, stress, injuries, work demands, and daily lifestyle.
They Adjust to Your Life: They continuously adapt your program to fit your changing needs, ensuring your habits fit smoothly into your daily routine.
You Simply "Vibe": Above all, you feel heard, supported, and confident in the relationship.
Before hiring a weight loss coach, clarify your goals, speak to 3 to 5 prospective coaches, and ask about their coaching philosophy. Pay attention to how they listen and communicate—trust your instincts and pick someone you genuinely connect with.
Stop right there - there's no rush, no fake scarcity, and no deadline to join. If any coach tells you that you have to join immediately in order to lock in the price, you should leave. If they make you feel silly for wanting to think about it, or question your relationships if you ask to consutlt your husband / friend / family - then you're in the wrong place.
Before you hire a weight loss coach, know this: You have to be ready, willing and able to make one small change in your life. Not a whole life overhaul. Not replacing your fridge contents. Just one thing. If you're not ready, that's okay. If you need help finding the first step, then a coach may be able to help. Either way, start with this quiz:

See What Naomi and Jakob have to say about online weight loss coaching:

Before working with Nico, I'd spent around ten years trying different diets and exercise plans. Every approach was extreme in one way or another. I'd stick to it for a month or two, but eventually I'd realise I couldn't live like that.
