A Personal Note From Coach Nico: After more than a decade helping people with fitness and nutrition, I made a choice to walk away from the fitness industry, and I think you should as well. The truth is that the commercial diet industry is built on a business model of repeat failure. It relies on selling "21 day bootcamps," "28 day detoxes," and quick fix magic bullets that sound amazing in a social media ad but are structurally designed to crash. When a rigid protocol inevitably collapses under the weight of real life, the industry shifts the blame onto you, claiming you "just didn't want it enough." You're left feeling ashamed, only to move on to the next fad. As an INFP mediator personality, that style of predatory selling goes completely against my values. I refuse to sell short term fixes because real, lasting health isn't built on 30 days of extreme suffering - it’s built on simple, sustainable daily habits that fit your actual life, your family, and your career. Do yourself a favour: turn off the noise, quit the diet cycle, and take off the pressure. You don't need a magic protocol - you just need a few fundamental skills and the patience to take it one manageable step at a time.
The best diet for long-term weight loss is one that prioritizes sustainability, nutrient density, and a manageable calorie deficit rather than strict restriction. Research consistently shows that long term success relies on long term adherence rather than specific macro ratios.
The best diet is the one you can stick to long term, meets your calorie needs and promotes nutrient density.
Severe fad diets (e.g., extreme keto or severe juice fasts) typically lead to weight regain.
Sustainable success requires gradual lifestyle modifications, adequate sleep, regular strength training, and eating habits you can maintain.
A quick search for "diet books" on Amazon returns over 142,000 results.
Every single one promises to be the secret breakthrough you’ve been missing. You’re told to cut carbs, ban fat, drink celery juice, eat like a caveman, or restrict your eating to a tiny four-hour window.
It’s no wonder we are confused, exhausted, and stuck in a constant cycle of trying a new diet every few months, only to land right back where we started.
Here is the simple truth that the diet industry won't tell you: There is no single "best" diet.
Human beings have evolved to thrive on a vast range of dietary styles. What makes a nutrition approach work isn't the specific food group it bans or the fancy name on the cover. What makes it work are foundational physiological principles and sustainable daily habits.
If you’re ready to stop wasting time and money on the latest craze, here is how to eat well for long term health, performance, and fat loss - without ever counting a single calorie or feeling like you're "on a diet" again.
Before choosing how you eat, you need to know what great nutrition actually looks like. Any approach to food worth following must satisfy five core criteria:
Controls Energy Balance: To lose body fat, you must create a negative calorie balance—expending more energy than you take in. A great nutrition plan manages this naturally without forcing you into severe starvation.
Provides High Nutrient Density: Focus on the ratio of nutrients (vitamins, minerals, fibre) relative to total calories. High nutrient density combined with lower calorie density keeps you full, energized, and nourished.
Improves Health & Performance: Crash diets often sacrifice long-term organ health, mood, and energy just to move the bathroom scale. True nutrition improves your blood work, daily energy, and physical capability alongside body composition.
Is Honest & Outcome-Based: Good nutrition delivers measurable feedback. If you claim you're "eating perfectly" but remain constantly exhausted, sluggish, or stuck, the strategy needs adjusting.
Is Sustainable for You and the Planet: It must fit your lifestyle, your budget, and your preferences long-term. Additionally, choosing whole, minimally processed foods supports environmental sustainability.
Managing calorie balance is essential, but counting every gram of food in tracking apps creates immense friction, unnecessary anxiety, and questionable accuracy (food labels can be off by up to 20%).
Instead, use a tool you carry with you everywhere: your own hand.
Your hand is proportional to your body size, scales automatically, and provides a simple, customizable baseline for every meal.

Note: These are starting baselines for 3–4 meals per day. If you aren't losing fat, slightly scale down your cupped hands of carbs or thumbs of fats. If you're losing weight too quickly or feeling lethargic, scale them up.
When weight loss stalls, most people assume they need a stricter diet. In reality, progress is usually blocked by a specific Limiting Factor - anything that makes it harder for you to execute your plan. Limiting factors generally fall into five categories:
Genetics: Your individual biological baseline and tendencies.
Physical Activity: Daily movement, exercise frequency, and neat activity.
Physiology: Sleep quality, stress levels, and hormonal health.
Mindset: Emotional eating, black-and-white rules, or belief systems.
Nutrition: Food choices, portion sizes, and eating environment.
NOTE: Your goal isn't to overhaul all five at once. Find your single weakest link - the easiest limiting factor that will yield the biggest result - and focus exclusively on fixing that.
Keto, Paleo, Intermittent Fasting, and low fat diets all have one thing in common: they temporarily increase your awareness around food.
By forcing you to cut out entire food categories or eliminate late night eating, they accidentally create a calorie deficit. You see quick results, get excited, and credit the "magic" of that specific diet.
Eventually, life happens. A stressful workweek, a family event, or sheer fatigue drains your finite store of willpower. Because the diet required extreme restriction rather than skill-building, you revert to old habits, regain the weight, and feel like you failed.
NOTE: The diet didn't teach you how to live; it just gave you a set of temporary rules.
Instead of starting another 30 day overhaul, build small, sustainable behaviors that turn healthy eating into second nature.
Here are five core habits that deliver 80% of your long term results:
Ask: "Am I Hungry?" Eat when you are physically hungry, rather than out of boredom, fatigue, or stress.
Eat Slowly: Take 15 to 20 minutes to complete a meal. Put your cutlery down between bites and chew your food thoroughly.
Eat Until 80% Full: Stop eating when you are satisfied, not stuffed, bloated, or sluggish.
Use Hand Portions: Anchor your meals around a palm of protein and a fist of vegetables before adding carbs and fats.
Focus on One Change at a Time: Pick a single habit to practice for two full weeks. Assess your progress before adding another.
Your Next Step - Try A 2 Week Challenge: Research shows that trying to change multiple lifestyle habits at once drops your chance of long-term success to less than 35%. Focusing on one single habit increases your success rate to over 80%. Pick one habit from the list above - for example, eating slowly or using hand portions for dinner - and focus on executing just that for the next 14 days. Small, intelligent steps taken consistently over a year build a healthy, effortless relationship with food that lasts a lifetime.

Before working with Nico, I'd spent around ten years trying different diets and exercise plans. Every approach was extreme in one way or another. I'd stick to it for a month or two, but eventually I'd realise I couldn't live like that.
